India rally driver Hari Singh, also known fondly as the ‘Gypsy King’ around the circuit, has gone missing following a speedboat accident in the Maldives, which has triggered a search operation by authorities.

Singh was involved in the speedboat accident that included seven people as the boat capsized near the Felidhoo island on the 19th of March.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but early reports suggest that the boat overturned roughly two nautical miles southwest of Keyodhoo.

Also among the seven members was industrialist Gautam Singhania, chairman and managing director of the Raymond Group, sustained injuries in the mishap but was rescued and later brought back to Mumbai and is currently on the mend.

However, Singh and at least one other person remain untraceable, with search efforts ongoing as the Maldives National Defence Force’s Male Area Command Coast Guard Second Squadron has been deployed for the operation. The Maldives authorities have been scanning the surrounding waters since the incident.

The 59-year-old Singh, a prominent name in Indian motorsport, is considered as one of the country’s most accomplished rally drivers. He kickstarted his long and illustrious career in 1990 with the Himalayan Car Rally and went on to dominate the sport through the 1990s and early 2000s.

Driving a Maruti Gypsy for the JK Tyre Rally Team, he secured five Indian National Rally Championship titles, earning him his famous nickname.

Singh also won the inaugural Asia Zone Rally Championship and represented the Indian tricolour at several international events, including the ASEAN and SAARC rallies.

Singh transitioned to a mentoring and operational roles during the later part of his career, working closely with JK Tyre Motorsport and Mercedes-Benz India to bolster the racing scenario in the nation.
