PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth kept India’s flag flying at the Indonesia Masters on Wednesday, grinding out hard-fought wins to move into the second round — while it was curtains early for the rest of the Indian contingent.

Fifth seed Sindhu showed her trademark composure in crunch moments, edging past Japan’s Manami Suizu 22-20, 21-18 in a tight 53-minute women’s singles clash.

The two-time Olympic medallist stayed calm when it mattered, closing out both games despite Suizu pushing her all the way.

Srikanth, meanwhile, dug deep in a marathon men’s singles battle to knock out world No.22 Koki Watanabe.

Ranked 33rd himself, the former world No.1 won 21-15, lost the second 21-23, then held his nerve in a dramatic decider to seal a 24-22 victory after one hour and 12 minutes on court.

The win sets up a stern second-round test for Srikanth against fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei, who eased past Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen in straight games.

Mixed results for rest of Indian contingent

Kiran George bowed out in the first round after a 17-21, 14-21 loss to Indonesia’s Moh Zaki Ubaidillah. In women’s singles, Akarshi Kashyap couldn’t convert a strong start, going down 21-8, 20-22, 17-21 to Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen.

India’s mixed doubles challenge also ended early. Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde were beaten 9-21, 20-22 by fourth seeds Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France, while Dhruv Kapila and Tanish Crasto fell in three games to Julien Maio and Lea Palermo.
