Scott McLaughlin walked away from a terrifying high-speed crash during second practice at Barber Motorsports Park.
Charging down the front straight at around 165 mph, McLaughlin clipped the grass on entry to Turn 1.
Then, in a chaotic turn of events, the rear snapped loose, the car spun, skated through gravel and grass, and, after a brutal bump, launched toward the barriers.
In what ended up being a nasty showing, the car clipped the tyre wall, smashed into the catch fencing, and ended up partially lodged beyond it.
Session Halted, Safety Crews Scramble
The incident immediately triggered a red flag, and moments later, the session was called off entirely.
The AMR Safety Team were on-site within seconds, extracting McLaughlin from the wreckage — and remarkably, the New Zealander walked away nearly scot-free.
Replays showed him bracing for impact, grabbing his helmet just before slamming into the fence.
Despite the violence of the crash, McLaughlin downplayed how it felt inside the cockpit.
“I knew I was done. I dropped the right rear and spun, so I just tried to brace myself a bit. I think the crash looked a lot worse than it felt."
Ironically, McLaughlin had been flying earlier, topping Friday’s session with a blistering lap before things unravelled.
“I feel good and love this place. I just want to get back out there and have a chance."
Ultimately, McLaughlin ended up 12th in the running order when practice ended, with a best lap of 1:06.8700.
