PM to launch new metro services in Kolkata
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate multiple metro projects in Kolkata on Friday (August 22).The PM, during his visit to West Bengal, will flag off a newly built 13.61-km metro corridor with services to be launched on these route.His schedule also includes green-lighting a new subway at Howrah Metro Station and opening of the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar link to boost airport connectivity. Additionally, the Prime Minister will also flag off the Sealdah–Esplanade metro service and the Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro service. He will also undertake a metro ride from Jessore Road Metro Station to Jai Hind Bimanbandar and back, just after the launch, according to ANI report.Travel time on the Sealdah–Esplanade stretch is said to drop from 40 minutes to 11 minutes, while the Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section will provide a key link to the city’s IT hub, with the infrastructural boosts. Officials said the new routes will ease congestion, cut travel time, and benefit hundreds of thousands of daily commuters by linking some of the city's most bustling areas
Other infra projects to be launched in Kolkata
In addition to the metro projects, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate a major road infrastructure project by laying the foundation stone for the 7.2 km six-lane elevated Kona Expressway, valued at over Rs 1,200 crore.
This project aims to improve connectivity between Howrah, its surrounding rural areas, and Kolkata, potentially saving hours in travel time and providing a substantial boost to trade, commerce, and tourism in the region. The Prime Minister will also address the public during the event.
Bihar visit in schedule too
Before Kolkata, the Prime Minister will be in Gaya, Bihar, where he will unveil projects worth around Rs 13,000 crore. These include the inauguration of the 8.15 km Aunta–Simaria bridge project on the Ganga, constructed at a cost of over Rs 1,870 crore, alongside the four-lane Bakhtiyarpur–Mokama section of NH-31 and improvements to the Bikramganj–Dawath–Nawanagar–Dumraon section of NH-120.
He will also inaugurate the Buxar Thermal Power Plant (660x1 MW), enhancing power generation and energy security in the region. In a boost for health and sanitation, PM will inaugurate the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre at Muzaffarpur, and a Sewerage Treatment Plant and network at Munger under Namami Gange worth over Rs 520 crore. The Prime Minister will also lay foundation stones for sewerage projects at Daudnagar, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Barahiya in Lakhisarai, and Jamui, along with water supply projects at Aurangabad, Bodhgaya, and Jehanabad under AMRUT 2.0. To improve connectivity and convenience, he will also flag off two trains—the Amrit Bharat Express between Gaya and Delhi and the Buddhist Circuit Train between Vaishali and Koderma. A Grih Pravesh ceremony for 12,000 beneficiaries under PMAY-Gramin and 4,260 beneficiaries under PMAY-Urban will also be held.
