A 64-year-old dead woman has been suspected of murdering her daughter and four grandchildren in New York through poisoning, according to several local reports.

The bodies of Amy Steadman and her daughter, Sarah Myers, 44, were discovered at her residence in Mechanicville on Tuesday after a neighbour expressed concern over her disappearance, NBC News reported, citing Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt.

The bodies of Steadman and Myers, along with the latter’s four children – Harper Harmon, 13, Hudson Harmon, 11, and Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon, both 10, were found at Steadman’s residence. Police said Myers and her children lived in a separate apartment in the building.

Rabbitt said the cops believed the family had been dead for “an extended period of time" and that officers could not immediately make identification because of the conditions of the bodies.

What Did Autopsies Reveal?

The autopsies of the deceased individuals revealed that one of the children suffered fatal sharp-force injuries. Investigators also recovered evidence in the apartment that indicates intentional poisoning, including “numerous prescription and over-the-counter medications", according to Rabbitt.

He said a handwritten note found in the apartment “strongly suggested that Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths", although he declined to discuss the note’s contents. He said there was no evidence to indicate an outside person was involved in the deaths.

“However, final determination regarding responsibility will be made only after all investigative findings, toxicology results and medical examiner reviews have been completed," Rabbitt added.

The father of the four children lives in Utah, Rabbitt said. Local media reports suggested that he had not seen his children since 2019, but he had planned to reunite with them next week after reaching a custody agreement.
