The India New Zealand Business Council (INZBC) has set up its Southern India Chapter in Chennai.

“Chennai and the wider Tamil Nadu region have emerged as one of India’s most dynamic economic hubs, with strong capabilities across manufacturing, automotive, technology, education, and renewable energy — sectors that align closely with New Zealand’s areas of interest and expertise,” said Selwyn Thomas, Head of INZBC Southern Chapter. This chapter will serve as a key hub for engagement across southern States, complementing its broader national and international network.

“A key priority is to enable institutional and academic collaborations, including partnerships between universities, research centres, and skilling institutions. This aligns with the growing demand for future-ready talent and global mobility pathways, an area where both countries have strong complementary strengths,” Mr. Thomas said. The Council also plans to work closely with stakeholders to establish structured platforms such as a New Zealand Desk within Tamil Nadu, enabling smoother engagement for investors, businesses, and government agencies from both sides.

“Chennai has a strong presence of global capability centres (GCCs), research institutions, and a skilled talent pool, which creates opportunities for deeper collaboration in innovation, knowledge exchange, and talent mobility — key priorities for India-New Zealand engagement,” Mr. Thomas added. INZBC serves as a bridge between businesses, institutions, and policymakers in both countries, helping to identify opportunities, facilitate partnerships, and highlight areas where collaboration can be deepened.

“The India New Zealand Business Council is closely aligned with the broader direction of India-New Zealand trade relations and ongoing discussions around a potential Free Trade Agreement (FTA). While the Council itself is not a negotiating body, it plays an important enabling role in supporting and strengthening bilateral economic engagement,” Mr. Thomas pointed out.
