Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has announced via VHF radio that no vessels are permitted to cross the Strait of Hormuz, effectively declaring the critical maritime chokepoint closed, according to a report cited by Reuters.

The announcement, reported by Tehran Times on social media, comes amid rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East following military exchanges involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Oman, the UAE and Iran, is one of the world’s most strategically vital shipping routes. More than 20-30 per cent of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass through the narrow waterway, making any disruption a matter of global economic concern.
