Iran said on Thursday that over a million troops and fighters have been mobilised to counter a possible US ground invasion, claiming that masses of people have come forward requesting to take part in defending the country.
Tehran’s Tasnim news agency, quoting a military source, reported that these forces have been organised and are ready for battle. Iranian authorities claimed that the possibility of the United States launching a ground invasion has prompted “a wave of enthusiasm" among the population to create what it calls a “historic hell for American forces".
This followed what the Iranian media described as a “huge reflex" by young Iranians to join the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) over the past few days. The commander of Iran’s ground forces, Brigadier General Ali Jahanshahi, warned that “the ground war will be more dangerous and costly for the enemy" and Tehran was ready for any scenario.
Will US Invade Iran?
This came after reports suggested that the United States was prepared to deploy thousands of troops from the US Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division to West Asia as the war is set to enter its fifth week, even as US President Donald Trump talks about a possible deal with Tehran to end the war.
The move would expand Trump’s options to include the deployment of forces inside Iranian territory to seize enriched uranium, or deploy forces near the Strait of Hormuz. Any such steps could dramatically escalate the conflict. This follows the US decision to send thousands of Marines and sailors aboard the USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, along with its Marine Expeditionary Unit and accompanying warships to the region.
Trump on Thursday said Tehran is “begging" to make a deal with the United States to end the war, even after the Iranians rejected his offer on Wednesday. He also warned Iran to “get serious" about his 15-point peace plan “before it is too late".
The US president reiterated that Iran’s “first-level leadership is gone" and the country would have been armed with nuclear weapons had the US not declared war against it. In the same breath, he also slammed NATO for not helping out with the strikes on the Islamic Republic.
While Trump has been saying for days that Iran wants to make a deal, Tehran has publicly spurned Washington’s overtures to end the conflict. But, his statements indicate that there are growing signs he is seeking a quick resolution.
While the US-Israeli campaign has hit Iran’s military and government hard, killing top leaders and striking scores of targets, Iran continues to fire missiles and there is no sign of an uprising against the government. Trump has vowed to strike Iran’s power plants if it doesn’t fully reopen the strait.
