Iran Says It Will Not Join Islamabad Talks Unless US Naval Blockade Is Lifted

Iranian officials reportedly informed mediators that Tehran would only participate in negotiations once the US removes restrictions.

Iran has said it will not send a delegation to upcoming talks in Islamabad unless the United States lifts its naval blockade affecting the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, citing officials familiar with the discussions.

Iranian officials reportedly informed mediators that Tehran would only participate in negotiations once the US removes restrictions on Iranian maritime access.

According to the report, Iran had initially indicated that it would send a delegation to Pakistan on Tuesday for the next round of talks. However, this position later changed, with officials informing mediators of the new condition tied to the lifting of the blockade.

The development comes as the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran approaches its expiry on Wednesday, ending a 14-day truce that has so far prevented a return to full-scale hostilities.

Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator, has said it is still awaiting a formal response from Tehran regarding participation in the second round of talks. Islamabad’s information minister said the absence of clarity from Iran remains a key concern as the deadline approaches.

“So far, no delegation from Iran has departed for Islamabad, Pakistan; whether it is the main or subsidiary delegation; primary or secondary," Iranian state television reported earlier, dismissing speculation that a team was already en route.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump struck a confident tone ahead of the planned negotiations, saying Washington was in a strong position. “We’re going to end up with a great deal. I think they (Iran) have no choice … We’re in a very, very strong negotiating position," he said in remarks to CNBC.
