Khamenei, who led Iran for over three decades, was killed on February 28 when the United States and Israel jointly launched strikes targeting key Iranian military and nuclear facilities. His death marked a major turning point in the country’s political and military leadership.

The funeral marks the beginning of a week-long farewell for Khamenei, who became Iran’s Supreme Leader in 1989 following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. His flag-draped casket arrived at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, where mourners gathered to pay their final respects.

Iranian authorities estimate that between 15 and 20 million people will participate in the farewell ceremonies for the slain leader. Extensive security arrangements have been put in place across the country, with heightened measures in and around the capital, Tehran.

Senior Iranian leaders, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, attended the ceremony to honour Khamenei. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, remained out of the public spotlight, while foreign dignitaries arrived in Tehran on Friday to pay their respects ahead of the funeral.
