The short-lived June ceasefire has completely collapsed after a sudden series of tit-for-tat strikes between the United States and Iran.
US President Donald Trump officially declared the peace agreement “over" following Iranian attacks on cargo vessels in the vital Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, the US military launched heavy strikes on over 80 Iranian military installations, leading Iran to counter-strike 85 US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait with drones and missiles.
With air raid sirens sounding across the Gulf and the US immediately revoking oil-sanctions waivers, the region stands on the precipice of a severe, uncontrolled escalation.
THREE TERRIFYING SCENARIOS
If fighting intensifies in the upcoming days, security analysts project three terrifying scenarios for the Middle East:
1. Total Maritime Suffocation and Global Energy Collapse
The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most critical oil chokepoint. If Iran fully executes its threat to permanently block the waterway using anti-ship missiles, drone swarms, and sea mines, transits through the strait could plunge by more than 50%, paralysing global trade lines. Over 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies will be instantly trapped. This will force energy prices to record highs, crushing economies in Asia and Europe. The US Navy and its allies will launch highly dangerous escort and counter-mining operations to break the blockade, transforming international waters into an active, high-intensity naval war zone.
2. Full-Scale Proxy Expansion and a Multi-Front War
The current fighting has been highly concentrated, but Iran’s “Axis of Resistance" network has the capacity to break all regional restraint.
The Lebanon-Israel Front: Militant groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon, which previously entered the conflict, could unleash their massive arsenal of high-precision rockets into northern and central Israel, overwhelming regional air defences.
The Red Sea Chokepoint: The Houthi movement in Yemen will likely resume aggressive drone and ballistic missile attacks against commercial vessels in the Bab al-Mandab strait and Red Sea, effectively cutting off European trade via the Suez Canal.
Syrian and Iraqi Crossfire: Pro-Iran militias in Iraq and Syria will launch coordinated rocket attacks against remaining US outposts, drawing devastating, large-scale coalition air campaigns into those countries.
3. Total Regional Vulnerability and Attacks on Gulf Infrastructure
Gulf Arab nations hosting US military assets will find themselves directly targeted by Iranian retaliation, even if they wish to remain neutral. As seen with the recent strikes on US installations in Bahrain and Kuwait, local governments will be directly dragged into the crossfire.
Iran has historically threatened regional energy infrastructure. Renewed escalation could see targeted drone strikes on desalination plants, power grids, and crucial oil refineries across the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Direct hits on Gulf factories, data centers, and civilian transport hubs will freeze foreign investment and trigger massive domestic security lockdowns across the entire Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) area.
