Four armed assailants attacked Chandan Mishra, a prisoner on parole, while he was receiving medical treatment at a private hospital. The attackers fired multiple shots, critically wounding Mishra, who was serving a life sentence for a 2011 murder.
PATNA: Four armed assailants fired shots at a prisoner on parole while he was receiving medical care at a private hospital at Raja Bazaar in Patna on Thursday morning, the police said.
The injured prisoner was identified as Chandan Mishra, a resident of Buxar district.The shooting occurred within the hospital premises, situated in the Shastri Nagar police station jurisdiction, when the unidentified attackers pumped three bullets into the victim’s body. The event caused widespread fear and disorder throughout the hospital premises. The wounded prisoner is presently receiving treatment, with doctors closely observing his condition. Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya K Sharma rushed to the spot along with senior police officers and launched an investigation to ascertain the identity of the assailants and establish the reasons behind the attack.The SHO of Shastri Nagar police station, Amar Kumar, said that the prisoner was undergoing treatment at the hospital. “The CCTV footage is being examined to identify the miscreants,” he said.
Chandan was convicted of murdering Rajendra Kesari, a local merchant, in 2011 for not paying extortion money and was serving his sentence. He was on a 15-day parole that was due to end on July 18. According to the police, the prisoner was scheduled to return to Beur Jail in Patna on July 18. He was admitted to a private hospital following health complications. Chandan Mishra was serving a life sentence for murder and spent 12 years in different prisons, including transfers from Buxar jail to Bhagalpur, and finally to Beur jail in Patna.Leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, targeted the govt at the murder inside the hospital through his social media post. He wrote: “Criminals entered the ICU of a hospital and shot a patient. Is no one safe in Bihar? Was it like this before 2005?”On Tejashwi Yadav's post, JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said, “Do you remember Tejashwi ji? Ask your Mummy and Daddy. On June 13, 1998, Brij Bihari Prasad, a minister in Rabri Devi's government, was murdered in IGIMS, Patna hospital! This was the ‘jungle raj’ of that era!”
