The current F1 Drivers’ Championship leader, Oscar Piastri, seems to have the clutch gene so far, having won five races so far. One could say, much unlike his favourite club, perhaps.
The McLaren driver revealed that he was a ‘gooner’ by default, admitting that Arsenal was his choice of poison in the Premier League.
The young Australian has taken the F1 world by storm this season, having put up a scintillating season so far, claiming 216 points and ousting his teammate Lando Norris by 15 points currently.
Heading into the British GP qualifying, Piastri boasted the best time on the final lap, only to be outdone by the four-time defending champion, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, in the dying seconds to have to claim P2 on the starting grid at Silverstone.
Much alike his favourite club, yet again.
In a talk with BBC Sport, Piastri revealed that he had pledged his allegiance to the Mikel Arteta-led Gunners, thanks to his girlfriend.
“My girlfriend’s family are all Arsenal supporters. So, by default, I’m Arsenal as well," Piastri revealed.
Ah well, the Aussie will be hoping not to replicate the Gunners’ history and end up in a 2nd-placed finish at Silverstone, which seems to be hit hard with rain currently: a factor that may just work in favour of Verstappen.
Speaking after qualifying, Verstappen acknowledged the tricky conditions caused by shifting winds around the high-speed circuit.
“It was tricky out there with the wind; it was all shifting around a bit and around here with these cars, it is extremely sensitive to it," said the Red Bull driver.
Calling Silverstone a “proper track," Verstappen emphasized the need for commitment:
“This is a proper track—when you have to go flat out, you have to be super committed."
Looking ahead to the race, the 27-year-old added, “We are quite quick on the straight, we have to wait and see what tomorrow will do, but I am happy — it is a big boost for the team and excited to go racing tomorrow."
