Is your skincare routine summer-ready? Expert reveals what to change

As temperatures soar, dermatologists advise a skincare overhaul. Embrace lightweight cleansers and oil-free moisturizers to combat summer's heavy buildup. Gentle exfoliation and diligent sunscreen application are crucial for protection. Remember to extend care to your body and mindfully adjust potent actives. These simple seasonal shifts ensure healthy, radiant skin all summer.

As temperatures rise, your skincare routine needs an upgrade. The products that worked perfectly in winter can often feel heavy, pore-clogging, or ineffective during hot and humid summer months.

Dermatologists often emphasize that seasonal skincare adjustments are essential to keep the skin healthy, balanced, and protected from environmental damage.Let us look at expert’s recommendations for changes in the routine to be summer ready. (1) Opt for lightweight cleansers - Pollutants, sweat, sebum and sunscreen get accumulated on the skin more during summers. Considering skin cleansing as the most important part of the skincare regime is highly appreciable.

This should be done with a gel-based or foam-based cleanser twice a day. But if your hours outdoors are more, opt for a quick face rinse or gentle cleanser in the evening. This helps to prevent clogged pores and skin breakouts. (2) Choose oil-free and lightweight moisturizers - One common mistake people make in summer is skipping moisturizer altogether. Even oily skin needs hydration. Instead of thick creams, dermatologists recommend lightweight, oil-free, or gel-based moisturizers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.

These ingredients hydrate the skin without leaving a greasy layer. Well-hydrated skin also maintains a stronger barrier, which helps prevent irritation and sensitivity during extreme heat.(3) Exfoliate gently - Skin exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and prevent skin dullness that are caused by sweat and oil buildup. But over exfoliation of the face can weaken the skin barrier and also cause irritation.

Gentle exfoliation is recommended once or twice a week, based upon the skin type. Mild chemical exfoliants are better tolerated during warmer months such as lactic acid or polyhydroxy acids. (4) Sunscreen is a must - During summers, the most important is protection from sun. When skin stays exposed to the sun’s UV rays, it leads to tanning, pigmentation or long term damage. A broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 should be comfortable.

Use a generous application on the face, neck, ears or other exposed areas at least 15-20 minutes before stepping out. Reapplication every two to three hours is crucial, especially if you are sweating or spending time outdoors.(5) Don’t miss out on body care - In summer skincare, focus should not be just limited to the face but also on the overlooked areas. This includes arms, neck, back, feet etc. Applying sunscreen on the body, choosing lightweight body moisturizers or opting for exfoliation once or twice a week helps to keep the skin healthy throughout the weather. (6) Limit the usage of heavy practices - Skin actives such as retinol, exfoliating acids, chemical peels etc. can be beneficial, but overuse can increase the skin' s sensitivity to sunlight. Strong actives used can be reduced in frequency of application. Also add skin barrier strengthening ingredients such as niacinamide, panthenol, soothing antioxidants etc. Vitamin C serums can be particularly helpful during summer as they support skin defense against environmental stress and enhance the effectiveness of sunscreen.A summer oriented skincare regime keeps the focus on simplicity, skin protection and also hydration. Lightweight creams, proper protection with SPF and mindful usage of actives helps to keep the skin clear, balanced and resilient even when it's intensely hot. Small seasonal changes in your routine can go a long way in preventing common summer concerns like breakouts, tanning, dehydration, and sensitivity - helping your skin stay healthy and radiant all season long.Inputs By Dr Ameesha Mahajan, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Founder, Eden Skin Clinic.
