Indian Super League clubs have requested the All India Football Federation for a resolution by December 8, while warning that delays could hurt the now-postponed league, according to a report in PTI. The league, which generally begins in October, is now postponed indefinitely.
The Marketing Rights Agreement between the federation and its commercial partner, Football Sports Development Limited, the organisers of the ISL, expires on December 8.
Beyond that date, the league will be left without a commercial framework or any operational clarity for the future.
“While the majority of the clubs have continued to honour salaries and contractual dues to players and staff in good faith, the current position isn’t merely challenging; it is approaching commercial impossibility and risks rendering ongoing operations untenable," the clubs said in a letter addressed to federation president Kalyan Chaubey.
The 12 ISL clubs include FC Goa, Sporting Club Delhi, NorthEast United FC, Jamshedpur FC, Bengaluru FC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Chennaiyin FC, Mumbai City FC, Kerala Blasters, Punjab FC, Odisha FC and Mohammedan Sporting.
Inter Kashi, which won the I-League and was promoted to the ISL for the upcoming season, was involved in the move as well.
“For nearly eleven years, ISL clubs have continued to invest substantially in football in India despite persistent losses on the strength of a predictable league structure and, most critically, central revenue," the letter said.
“With the expiry of the MRA and the consequent absence of a commercial rights holder, central revenue has ceased entirely," the letter added.
The clubs further requested AIFF to collaborate with the government and outline the corrective steps discussed with sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya by December 8, ensuring that the Supreme Court is informed of the proposed remedial plan.
“… time is now of the essence. The viability of the clubs and indeed the future of the ISL and the Indian football ecosystem depends on immediate steps being taken before the Hon’ble Supreme Court," the letter said.
