Tensions in the Middle East have escalated further amid reports that Israel may have targeted Iran’s top leadership and senior military officials in recent strikes.
According to emerging claims, Israel allegedly attempted to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the country’s President as part of a broader operation. While there has been no official confirmation from Israeli or US authorities regarding such an attempt, the reports have intensified concerns of a major escalation.
An Iranian source close to the establishment told Reuters that several senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and political officials were killed in what were described as US-Israeli strikes. Iranian authorities have yet to release a comprehensive list of casualties.
Adding to the developments, assessments within Israel reportedly suggest there is a “good chance" that Ali Shamkhani — a senior adviser to Khamenei and a key figure linked to Iran’s nuclear programme — was among those eliminated. Shamkhani has long been considered one of the most influential figures in Iran’s security establishment.
If confirmed, his death would mark a significant blow to Iran’s strategic and nuclear decision-making apparatus.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps plays a central role in Iran’s military and regional operations, and the reported targeting of its senior leadership signals a dramatic intensification of the long-running shadow conflict between Israel and Iran.
Neither Tehran nor Washington has officially confirmed the full extent of the casualties or the specific targets of the strikes. Meanwhile, global leaders have urged restraint, warning that further escalation could destabilise the wider region.
Diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway to prevent the situation from spiralling into a broader military confrontation.
