US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth’s firing of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, an extraordinary move amid the war with Iran, has raised concerns among military leaders about its potential impact on the conflict and highlighted tensions between the Pentagon chief and senior military leadership.

Hegseth asked General Randy George on Thursday to step down from his position as the Army Chief of Staff, while two other Army officials – General David Hodne of the Army’s Transformation and Training Command and Major General William Green of the Army’s Chaplain Corps – were also dismissed in the purge, with the Pentagon citing the need for a leadership change.

George and Hodne join a growing list of generals and flag officers fired by Hegseth, signalling heightened tensions within Donald Trump’s so-called Department of War. Two US officials told Axios that George’s dismissal was motivated by clashing personalities and not disagreements over where the Army is headed.

Why Hegseth’s Moves Are Significant?

One of those officials described the firing during a war as “insane", adding that it did not feel like a “very strong, self-assured decision." The firings come while elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division are bound for the Gulf amid the war against Iran.

“Here is a four-star general who is actively working to get equipment and people into the theatre — to protect US forces — and you fire him? In the middle of a war?" a third official told Axios.

Last year, Hodne was appointed to lead the Transformation and Training Command (T2COM), tasked with accelerating the Army’s technology development and deployment under the Army Transformation Initiative spearheaded by George. The former US Army chief had also emphasised the need to boost weapons production and expand domestic capacity amid the Iran war.

With George being out, Hegseth has remade nearly the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff, a panel of senior military officers at the Pentagon that advises both the president and the secretary, as per the Wall Street Journal.

Early last year, the Trump administration fired General Charles Q Brown Jr., then the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Admiral Lisa Franchetti, head of the US Navy; Admiral Linda Fagan, commandant of the Coast Guard; and General James Slife, vice chief of staff of the Air Force. Hegseth later asked General David Allvin, chief of staff of the Air Force, to retire early last fall.
