Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and DMK MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin on Tuesday once again made remarks against Sanatan Dharma, saying, “Sanathanam, which separated people, should be eradicated," while speaking in the Assembly.

His remarks drew sharp criticism from the BJP, with party spokesperson CR Kesavan accusing him of promoting divisive politics.

Udayanidhi Stalin’s Comments Draw BJP’s Ire

“Udayanidhi Stalin is the Rahul Gandhi of Tamil Nadu, peddling divisive hate politics…," Kesavan said. He further alleged that the DMK had repeatedly insulted Hindu beliefs and traditions. He also claimed the people of Tamil Nadu would not forgive such remarks against their faith.

Udhayanidhi has previously faced backlash over similar comments. Earlier this year, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court quashed an FIR filed against BJP leader Amit Malviya over his remarks on the controversy. While hearing the matter, Justice S Srimathy observed that Udhayanidhi’s speech amounted to “hate speech," noting that he had spoken about the “eradication" rather than mere opposition to Sanatan Dharma.

Tamil Nadu’s First Assembly Session After Polls

The DMK leader’s latest comments came during the first Assembly session after actor-turned-politician Vijay-led TVK registered a massive win in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar was unanimously elected Speaker of the House.

During his address, Udhayanidhi praised Chief Minister Vijay for maintaining political civility and urged both the ruling party and the opposition to work together for Tamil Nadu’s progress. He also raised objections over Vande Mataram being played before Tamil Nadu’s state song during the swearing-in ceremony and said the state song “should never be pushed to the second spot."
