Lewis Hamilton, a record nine-time winner at Silverstone, returns to his home Grand Prix this weekend looking to snap a 13-race run without a podium finish, matching the longest drought of his storied Formula One career.
Now driving for Ferrari in his first British Grand Prix with the Italian team, the seven-time world champion is eager to turn the page with a statement performance.
“It would be a great place to be able to change that, so that’s what we are working towards," Hamilton told reporters on Thursday. The 40-year-old Briton hasn’t finished on the podium since last season, but Silverstone has often brought out his best.
Hamilton’s record at his home race is unparalleled: seven pole positions, 14 podiums—the most ever by any driver at a home Grand Prix—and, most memorably, a victory last year that ended a 56-race winless streak and a 945-day wait.
A New Chapter in Familiar Territory
Until now, Hamilton has only raced at Silverstone for British teams—first McLaren, then Mercedes. This weekend marks a new chapter as he takes to the circuit in Ferrari red.
“I don’t really know what to expect this weekend," he admitted. “Thursday is always the least enjoyable day of the week—you just want to be in the car. I can’t wait for Friday to come."
“Driving on track for the first time in a red car at Silverstone is going to be unique and special in its own way," he added.
Hamilton credited the home crowd for playing a vital role in his past successes.
“We have the best fans here at the British Grand Prix, and for a British driver, they really, really do make a difference. I think I’ve shown that to you time and time again. I hope this weekend they can really make a difference for us as well."
