Italy? No, Just AS Roma: Claudio Ranieri Turns Down National Team Manager Offer

Claudio Ranieri announced on Tuesday that he has declined the offer to become the Italy national football team manager, opting to stay with his beloved AS Roma as part of the management.

The role became vacant after four-time world champions Italy dismissed Luciano Spalletti, following their 3-0 defeat to Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier on Friday.

Spalletti, 66, who previously coached Napoli, confirmed his dismissal on Sunday. Ranieri, who retired for a second time after his tenure at AS Roma last season, expressed his gratitude for being considered for the position by Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina.

“I thank President Gravina for the opportunity and the honour, but after careful consideration, I have decided to remain fully committed to my new role as senior advisor at Roma," Ranieri informed Italian news agency ANSA.

Ranieri also mentioned that Roma owners, the Friedkins, supported his decision regarding the national team but emphasized that the choice was solely his.

Last season, Ranieri guided Roma to a fifth-place finish in Serie A, securing a spot in the Europa League. The 73-year-old has now been succeeded by former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma.
