Part of the USBRL mega project

The bridge is an essential component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), an infrastructure project worth over INR 43,000 crore that aims to provide all-weather access between the Indian railway network and the Kashmir Valley.

Engineering marvel in extreme terrain

Built to withstand winds up to 266 km/h and earthquakes up to magnitude 8, the bridge’s design and construction involved some of the most challenging geotechnical and engineering work undertaken in India.

Anji Khad Bridge also inaugurated

Along with the Chenab Bridge, PM Modi also inaugurated the Anji Khad Bridge—the first cable-stayed railway bridge in India. Together, they represent major breakthroughs in Himalayan railway infrastructure.

36 tunnels, 943 bridges across 272 km

The entire USBRL line connects Baramulla in the Valley with Udhampur in Jammu via 36 tunnels and 943 bridges spanning 272 km over hazardous terrain.

Lifespan and safety built in

With corrosion-resistant materials and continuous health monitoring sensors, the Chenab Bridge is constructed to last for more than 120 years, guaranteeing its structural integrity throughout time.

Economic and tourism impact

The project is anticipated to significantly improve tourism, logistics, and regional development in Jammu and Kashmir by providing quicker, safer, and more picturesque access to the Valley.

INR 46,000 crore development push

During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation for other projects worth over INR 46,000 crore, including new roads, flyovers, and a medical college in Reasi district.
