Liverpool’s £60m signing Jeremy Jacquet was injured for Rennes.

Liverpool’s shiny new signing Jeremy Jacquet has barely had time to unpack before trouble struck.
Just days after the Reds agreed a £60 million deal to bring the highly rated centre-back to Anfield this summer, the 20-year-old suffered what Rennes have described as a “serious" shoulder injury during their 3–1 Ligue 1 defeat to Lens on Saturday.
Jacquet landed awkwardly in the second half and was left in clear agony, screaming as he was forced off in the 69th minute.
The scenes were unsettling, and the diagnosis afterwards did little to calm nerves on Merseyside.
“For Jeremy, it’s his shoulder," Rennes head coach Habib Beye confirmed post-match. “We’ll have time to see, but it’s definitely quite serious."
Liverpool completed the deal earlier this week, fending off strong interest from Chelsea to land the France U21 international for an initial £55m plus £5m in add-ons. Jacquet is set to remain at Rennes until the end of the season before officially joining the Reds on a long-term contract.
The timing, though, is far from ideal.
Liverpool are already stretched at the back, with Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley all sidelined ahead of Sunday’s heavyweight clash with Manchester City. While Jacquet wasn’t expected to arrive until the summer, any long-term injury raises early concerns about his readiness.
New head coach Arne Slot had only just sung Jacquet’s praises, calling him “a very big talent" and a perfect example of Liverpool’s model of investing in young players with huge upside.
Now, Liverpool wait, fingers crossed, hoping their future defensive cornerstone hasn’t hit his first major roadblock before even pulling on a red shirt.
