Malayalam cinema's mastery of comedy is highlighted through legendary actors like Jagathy Sreekumar and Innocent, whose performances remain iconic. The article explores the evolution of comic talent, from Sreenivasan's wit to Salim Kumar's absurdity and Harisree Ashokan's physical humor. Modern stars like Suraj Venjaramoodu continue this rich tradition, proving comedy's enduring appeal.
Malayalam cinema has always understood something that few other film industries have that comedy, done right, is the hardest craft in the room. From Jagathy Sreekumar's extraordinary range across more than 1,500 films to Innocent's effortless ability to balance laughter and emotion in classics like 'Ramji Rao Speaking' and 'Kilukkam,' from Sreenivasan's sharp observational wit in 'Nadodikkattu' to Salim Kumar's layered absurdist performances, and from Harisree Ashokan's beloved physical comedy to the contemporary versatility of Suraj Venjaramoodu, M-Town has produced a lineage of comic performers that rivals any film industry in the world.
Jagathy Sreekumar to Innocent
At the forefront of Malayalam comedy stands the legendary Jagathy Sreekumar. With a career spanning over 1,500 films his talent remains unmatched, ranging from intense characters to comic sidekicks. Films like 'Kireedam' and 'Thoovanathumbikal' show his range and his roles in Priyadarshan films further soared his legacy. Even today his expressions and dialogues continue to live on through memes and re-runs.
On the other hand, Jagathy was last seen in Mammootty's 'CBI 5: The Brain'. He will next be seen in the sci-fi film 'Vala'.Innocent brought a unique charm to Malayalam cinema and his performances in 'Ramji Rao Speaking', 'Mannar Mathai Speaking', 'Godfather', and 'Kilukkam', among many others, remain unforgettable. Innocent could perfectly balance humor and emotion and his natural presentation adds a unique flair to his comedies.
Salim Kumar, Harisree Ashokan
Actors like Salim Kumar, Harisree Ashokan, and Sreenivasan added different shades to comedy. Salim Kumar often mixed humor with absurdity and depth. Reflecting on modern cinema, he said in an earlier interview with The Indian Express, “There are no comedy roles in the films today. That is why we are doing serious roles. I have always and still would like to do comedy roles. But there is a dearth of such roles. I love making people laugh,”He also added, “Now we can’t call someone bald or dark. Political correctness has to be followed in every word.
We don’t know when a case will be filed against us.”Harisree Ashokan became known for his slapstick humor and physical comedy. Sreenivasan, on the other hand, delivered intelligent, observational humor in films like 'Nadodikkattu'.
Debates on improvisation and craft
Discussions around comedy in Malayalam cinema also extend to performance styles. During an earlier interaction with YouTube channel Saina South Plus, Harisree Ashokan said, “If we are improvising a scene, we should always first talk to the director and scriptwriter, and only after taking their opinions into account can we move forward.”Actor Lal added, “When talking about Ambili Chettan (Jagathy Sreekumar), one of the most talked-about things is that he often makes changes to dialogues unexpectedly, along with certain improvisations that shouldn’t be encouraged. That shouldn’t happen. If it does, the director should intervene and request him to give prior notice before making such changes—or remove that completely. That’s not an achievement; it’s not right, no matter how big of a star they are.
”
Suraj Venjaramoodu to Aju Varghese
The newer generation continues this legacy with actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu, Aju Varghese, Dharmajan Bolgatty, and Hareesh Kanaran. Suraj has evolved into a versatile performer by balancing comedy and serious roles. Aju Varghese brings charm, while Dharmajan and others contribute with energetic, contemporary humor. The recent film 'Aadu 3' proves that the audiences are still into comedy films if they are executed in a perfect way.
And also the upcoming film 'Vaazha 2' promises to offer several new comedy talents to the Malayalam cinema and majority of them are social media influencers including Joemon Jyothir, Siju Sunny, Amith Mohan Rajeswari, Saaf, Anuraj OB, Hashir and Gang and Al Ameen.
