Municipal Administration and Haj Minister Rahim Khan on Sunday described Babu Jagjivan Ram as an exceptional leader who rose from an oppressed background to become the Deputy Prime Minister of the country.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 119th birth anniversary celebrations of Jagjivan Ram at Channabasava Pattadevaru Rangamandir in Bidar.
The programme was jointly organised by the district administration, the Zilla Panchayat, the City Municipal Council, the Kannada and Culture Department and the Social Welfare Department.
Mr. Khan said that Jagjivan Ram played a pivotal role in addressing the severe food crisis faced by India in the 1970s and led the country towards agricultural self-sufficiency.
“It is in recognition of his contributions that his birth anniversary on April 5 is observed as Samata Diwas,” he said.
Recalling his contributions, the Minister said that Jagjivan Ram served the nation for nearly three decades as Union Minister and made significant contributions as Defence Minister during the 1971 war and as Agriculture Minister.
“His commitment to equality and social justice continues to guide society even today,” he added.
Mr. Khan also said that ₹2 crore has already been sanctioned for the construction of a Bhavan in Bidar in honour of Jagjivan Ram and additional funds will be provided if required.
He added that the proposal for the construction of a circle in his name will be discussed with the Deputy Commissioner.
In a message, Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister and Bidar district in-charge Eshwar B. Khandre paid tributes to Jagjivan Ram, describing him as a champion of equality and a key architect of India’s Green Revolution.
He said that Jagjivan Ram’s life, marked by his rise from humble beginnings despite social discrimination, remains an inspiration for future generations.
He expressed inability to attend the event due to official engagements and urged people to follow the ideals of the leader.
Government First Grade College professor Mahadevi Hebbale delivered a special lecture on the life and contributions of Jagjivan Ram.
Earlier, a procession carrying the portrait of Jagjivan Ram was taken out from Shivaji Circle, through Bhagat Singh Circle and Basaveshwar Circle before reaching his statue where floral tributes were paid.
The procession later proceeded through Ambedkar Circle and Rotary Circle before concluding at the venue.
