Father Time catches everyone — even ‘The Beard’.

At 36, James Harden understands the end of his career is closer than the beginning.

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard recently opened up about the reality of retirement, offering a rare glimpse into his mindset as he navigates the twilight of a Hall of Fame career.

“I know it’s coming soon. Hopefully, later than soon, but it’s a reality," Harden told HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

“Everybody has to go through this at some point. Just trying to continue to keep my body in shape and play well. We’ll see what happens in the next few years. Take one game at a time and cherish the moments."

Despite missing time with a thumb injury, Harden remains one of the NBA’s most productive guards. He’s averaging 24.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game this season: elite numbers for any player, let alone someone ranked among the 20 oldest active players in the league.

His fit in Cleveland has been seamless. Alongside Donovan Mitchell, Harden has helped elevate the Cavaliers into legitimate contenders.

It’s a different role from earlier stops in his career, where he was often the primary engine, most notably during his MVP peak with the Houston Rockets.

Now, the mission feels more urgent.

A six-time First-Team All-NBA selection and the 2017–18 league MVP, Harden has logged over 1,200 games across stints with Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, the Los Angeles Clippers and now Cleveland.

The explosiveness may not be what it once was, but the craft, IQ and playmaking remain elite.

Retirement may be on the horizon. But for now, Harden is still chasing the ever-elusive championship ring.
