James Harden ascended to 10th place on the NBA’s career scoring list on Saturday, surpassing Carmelo Anthony during the Los Angeles Clippers’ 109-106 loss to Minnesota. Harden entered the game trailing Anthony’s career total of 28,289 points by 20 points. He moved ahead of the Hall of Famer with a pair of free throws in the third quarter.
“Blessing. A testament to the work I’ve put in," Harden commented. “It’s an honor, especially with somebody like Melo, who’s achieved so much greatness in this league."
Despite Harden’s impressive performance, scoring 34 points on 10-for-18 shooting, he missed a game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer. The Clippers had previously held an 18-point lead in the first half.
The 17-year veteran is averaging 26.5 points per game this season, marking his highest average since he led the league with 34.3 points per game during the 2019-20 season with the Houston Rockets.
Next on the list for Harden is Shaquille O’Neal, who amassed 28,596 points during his distinguished Hall of Fame career.
