Jannik Sinner finally gets his hands on a maiden Wimbledon title, sinking two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in four hard-fought sets at Centre Court in Wimbledon on Sunday.
The Italian World No. 1 lost the initial battle, but rose to the occasion in the coming sets to kill the Spaniard’s hopes in four sets of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
The encounter started off in predictable fashion: those who held the serve, held the game.
Alcaraz, who started off with the serve, set the tone with a scorching ace to kick things off. And what entailed was a constant exchange of games as the best in the world showcased their might for all to witness at Centre Court.
But, the turning point arrived in the fifth game, as Sinner finally found the break point, and turned the tide ever-so-slightly in his favour, breaking away 3-2 with the serve.
This would just urge Alcaraz to kick into another gear, as the Spaniard delivered with a range of slides, slices, and forehands to break Sinner back in the eighth game to tie it up at 4-4.
Knowing he wouldn’t find many opportunities against the World No. 1, Alcaraz went for the kill, claiming his game with the serve and breaking Sinner yet again to seal the set 6-4 and take the early lead.
The Italian though would remain unfazed.
A fired-up Alcaraz took serve, only to be shocked by Sinner. The World No.1 would waste no time, instantly stealing the break point in the second game from the Spaniard to edge out his rival early.
From then onwards, it was business as usual for Sinner, as a heated exchange of games would ensue with Alcaraz failing to find his stride in a moment of confusion.
The wily Italian would capitalise on the same, to steal yet another break point in the seventh game, and wipe away the Spaniard to return a taste of the medicine with a 6-4 set win.
Sinner would look to ride on the momentum and scare Alcaraz again in the first game of the third set, racing to two break points. But, a determined Alcaraz would fire back classically, and regain control to claim the game.
The two would trade haymakers galore as the games and time ticked on. But, it would yet again be the Italian who would strike hard to win the essential break point in the ninth game, to take the slender 2-1 set lead and close out Alcaraz in the following game.
Seemingly wearied and lost for answers, the World No. 2 would be craving to claw his way back into the match, but Sinner would only go on to grant the Spaniard a swift departure.
After breaking Alcaraz again in the fouth set, Sinner would calmly waltz through the remainder of the set exchange, aided by his blitzing serve which left Alcaraz unnerved, and close out the match with yet another 6-4 win, as the Italian finally laid claim to the coveted Wimbledon title.
Sinner claimed the Australian Open earlier this year, while Alcaraz secured the French Open title, and now the Italian has one-upped him yet again with one more Slam left to play.
