Japan's Next-Gen E10 Shinkansen Series To Debut On Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Route

In the spirit of strategic partnership between Japan and India, the Japanese government has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.

The ministry of railways made the announcement on Monday, explaining Japan operates the E5 series Shinkansen trains at present while the E10 is the next-generation upgrade. The E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan, it said.

“The entire 508-km corridor is being developed with Japanese Shinkansen technology. It will set new benchmarks for speed, safety, and reliability. This reflects the deep strategic and technological cooperation between India and Japan," an official statement said.

CONSTRUCTION AT RAPID PACE

Civil works for the bullet train project are progressing at a rapid pace across the alignment. A total of 310 km of the viaduct is already constructed. Track laying, overhead electrical wiring as well as construction of stations and bridges are on at a rapid pace.

In parallel, the progress on procurement of systems for operations and control is also ongoing. In addition, 15 river bridges have been completed and four are in the advanced stages of construction. 

“Out of 12 stations, five are completed and three more are now reaching completion stage," the ministry said.

WORK IN MAHARASHTRA PICKS UP

The construction work in Maharashtra has picked up. Earlier this month, the bullet train project achieved a major milestone of opening the first section of the 21-km undersea tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Thane.

The ministry termed the station at BKC an engineering marvel. It will be located 32.5 m below the ground and the foundation is designed to support the construction of a 95-metre high building above ground.

Earlier this year, the ministry said the timeline for completion of the bullet train project can be “reasonably ascertained" after all associated civil works related to structures, track, electrical, signalling and telecommunication, and supply of trainsets are done.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, for the operation of the bullet train, is passing through Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The length of the project is 508 km with 12 stations planned at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

The physical work for the project started in September 2017 with the initial deadline as December 2023. But the project was delayed, and it is now expected that one of the sections can be made operational by 2026 in Gujarat, ahead of the assembly elections in the state.
