India and Japan are set to expand bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi kickstarts her three-day visit to New Delhi today, marking her maiden trip to the country since assuming office.
At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Takaichi will embark on an official visit to New Delhi from July 1 to 3 to attend the 16th India-Japan annual summit, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
“The Summit will provide an opportunity for both sides to review and strengthen the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation as well as exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest," the MEA had said last week .
Takaichi will meet Prime Minister Modi during her trip to New Delhi, with the discussions aimed at exploring new areas of cooperation and enhancing ties between the two nations. The Japanese premier will also discuss the new version of Japan’s Indo-Pacific Policy –– Centered on the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) framework, the policy covers maritime security and aims to counter economic coercion, alongside building strong supply chains.
What’s On Agenda?
According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the two leaders will discuss ways to bolster mutually complementary cooperation under the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next Decade –– announced at PM Modi’s last visit to Japan in August 2025 –– spanning various areas, including energy, investment, and economic growth.
The Japan-India Joint Vision for Next Decade was unveiled during Prime Minister Modi’s last visit to Tokyo. Under the framework, Japan aims at investing 10 trillion yen in India over the next decade, ensuring the further strengthening of bilateral relations in the face of growing geopolitical turmoil.
A business delegation of 50 Japanese executives will accompany Takaichi on her first-ever trip to India. As per a Mint report, joint statements on the Annual Summit, and pacts covering AI, batteries, and critical minerals and expected to be signed.
Strategy For Direct Yen-Rupee Transaction
New Delhi and Tokyo are set to finalise plans for a local-currency settlement framework to allow direct yen-rupee transactions for bilateral trade between the two nations, a Nikkei Asia report said.
The framework would enable the two countries to eliminate routing transactions through the U.S. dollar, said the report. The proposal is likely to feature on the joint statement after a meeting between PM Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Takaichi.
A Look At India-Japan Relations
Bound by a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, India and Japan exchange cooperation in multiple sectors, including trade and investment, infrastructure, defence and security, clean energy and emerging technologies.
Between April and December 2025, Japanese investment in India was recorded at USD 3.2 billion. Meanwhile, bilateral trade between the two countries stood at USD 27.5 billion in FY2025-26, according to official data.
Japan is also among India’s largest investors, with Japanese firms actively stepping up investments in Indian companies.
