Javier Mascherano leaves Inter Miami after a successful stint that included an MLS Cup. The Argentine stated he's stepping down for personal reasons.

In shocking news, Javier Mascherano has officially stepped down as head coach of Inter Miami CF, bringing an abrupt end to a largely successful tenure that lasted just over a year.

The former Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona star confirmed his departure on Tuesday, citing personal reasons.

“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF," Mascherano said in an official club statement.

“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star… I have no doubt that the Club will continue to achieve success in the future."

Mascherano guided Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup in 2025 and topped the Eastern Conference in the same season.

Across 67 games in charge, the Argentine won 38 and signed off on an eight-game unbeaten run, including a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls.

Beyond domestic success, Mascherano also led Inter Miami into uncharted territory internationally.

The club became the first MLS side to reach the knockout rounds of the FIFA Club World Cup, while also registering historic wins — becoming the first CONCACAF team to beat European opposition in an official match, and the first U.S. side to win at the tournament.

Timing Raises Eyebrows

The departure comes just seven games into the 2026 MLS season, with Inter Miami currently sitting third in the Eastern Conference after three wins.

Which makes the timing… interesting, to say the least.

Mascherano exits alongside his coaching staff, with Guillermo Hoyos stepping in as interim head coach.
