The Chess World Championship is set — and it’s Gukesh vs Javokhir Sindarov!

The Uzbek prodigy wrapped up the 2026 Candidates Tournament with a round to spare, drawing his penultimate game against Anish Giri to officially clinch the title.

A Run for the Ages

Sindarov finished on 9.5 points after 13 rounds, a full two points clear of Giri.

The 20-year-old notched six wins, zero losses at the Candidates — putting up one of the most commanding performances the tournament has seen.

Even when Giri had chances to close the gap, most notably against Wei Yi, the door stayed firmly shut.

Next Stop: World Championship

The reward? A date with destiny.

Sindarov will now face reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju later this year. Both players are 20, making it the youngest World Championship match in history.

Gukesh, of course, claimed the crown in 2024 after defeating Ding Liren — a title that became available after Magnus Carlsen stepped away from the classical cycle.

The Changing of the Guard

This Candidates was billed as a last stand for the old guard. But players like Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura barely made a dent.

Instead, it was Sindarov who stole the show. And he did it his way.

While peers like R Praggnanandhaa packed their schedules with classical events, Sindarov played just four in 2025. Then, he flipped the script in 2026 with six tournaments, hitting peak form at exactly the right time.

One round still remains, but the job is already done.
