Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad’s joint commissioner of police (crime), Sharad Singhal, shot an alleged history-sheeter in the leg after the suspect allegedly attacked him with a knife during interrogation near Chandola on Thursday evening.

Singhal sustained multiple injuries to his left arm while fending off the attack.According to the city crime branch, the incident took place around 5.30pm when Singhal, police inspector Imran Ghasura and a sub-inspector were questioning Kaleem Pathan, who was detained on the basis of intelligence inputs about illegal firearms.Police said Ghasura’s team intercepted Pathan near Chandola and allegedly recovered four illegal weapons from his possession.

Singhal, who was passing through the area, joined the team for the interrogation.

Addressing reporters at Civil Hospital in Asarwa, where he was treated, Singhal said, “Ghasura, who works with the city crime branch, got a tip-off that Pathan was carrying four weapons. Ghasura and his team went to Chandola and seized four weapons from him. I was passing from that area, so I went there and began interrogating him.”“During interrogation, Pathan took a knife from the kitchen and tried to slash my neck.

I defended the attack with my left hand and suffered multiple cuts. Pathan was very aggressive as he was under the influence of some drugs. I told him to throw away the knife, but he did not listen. So, I took Ghasura’s service revolver and shot him in the leg, after which he was pacified,” Singhal said. Both Singhal and Pathan were shifted to hospital for treatment.Police registered two FIRs against Pathan by Thursday evening.

“Pathan was booked for possessing illegal weapons in the first FIR and charged with attempt to murder in the second,” Singhal said.Responding to questions over his presence during the operation, Singhal said he was in civilian clothes when he reached the spot. “People are asking why the JCP went there and why a history-sheeter attacked the JCP. I went to the place in civil dress and he did not know that I was the JCP, crime,” he said.
