US Vice President JD Vance visited Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday as part of a strategic push ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. His visit included delivering remarks at a Republican National Committee (RNC) meeting in the city, followed by a stop at a refrigeration manufacturing plant in nearby Peachtree City.

During his speech at the RNC gathering, Vice President Vance reiterated his support for the Trump administration’s key legislative initiative, the One Big, Beautiful Bill. He emphasised the federal tax cuts outlined in the plan, telling attendees, “We believe you ought to keep more of your hard earn[ed] money."

Vance further pledged to introduce legislation aimed at generating significant financial relief for working-class Americans. He cited the Trump administration’s broader goal of implementing $4.5 trillion in tax cuts. Among the proposed measures are eliminating taxes on tips and expanding the child tax credit, two policies Republican leaders argue would provide direct benefits to American families and service industry workers.

The Vice President also addressed domestic security concerns, referencing recent actions by the Trump administration to deploy National Guard troops in the nation’s capital. Vance noted he had visited Washington’s Union Station alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to meet with Guard members stationed there.

Defending the deployment as part of a broader law enforcement strategy, Vance stated, “We’ve got to take America’s streets back for the American people." When asked if similar deployments were being considered for cities like Atlanta, he responded, “We hope the people see what we’re doing in Washington, D.C., and follow our example all across the country."

The visit sparked criticism from Georgia Democrats, including US Senator Jon Ossoff, who is seeking reelection in 2026. Ossoff called Vance’s trip a “damage control mission."

“Defunding hospitals and nursing homes to cut taxes for the wealthiest people in the country is not popular here in Georgia," Ossoff said. He also drew attention to Georgia’s high maternal mortality rate and what he described as a worsening health care access crisis.

Democrats have repeatedly criticised the Trump-backed tax plan as a giveaway to the wealthy, claiming it jeopardises public programs like Medicaid that serve low-income Americans.
