With the release of the final tranche of the Jeffrey Epstein files, wild theories about his death are being floated on social media.

Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy American financier and convicted sex offender who ran an international sex trafficking ring involving underage girls. Ghislaine Maxwell is a former British socialite and his longtime associate who was convicted of recruiting and grooming many of his victims.

Epstein had died by hanging in his New York jail cell in August 2019 and it was ruled a suicide. As of late 2025, Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence in a United States federal prison. She was convicted in 2021 for sex trafficking of a minor and associated crimes. In 2025, she was moved to a prison in Texas.

While tattoo to body double, many claimed discrepancies to prove he is alive, others pointed that AI-generated images may be circulating.

‘Missing Tattoo’ & Body Double Theory: X users are circulating, comparing, and analyzing autopsy photographs against older photos of Epstein, claiming that a tattoo on his left upper arm is missing in the stretcher photos. They allege a body double was switched with him before his alleged suicide.

“If Jeffrey Epstein is dead and Ghislaine Maxwell is not then Epstein is not dead , ghislaine knows as much as him so why is she alive ? Why are they not asking her questions ? Epstein is out somewhere chilling rn probably," one person remarked on X.

“That’s not Jeffrey on the autopsy table…They switched him with a similar body! Look at the shape of the nose and ears—they’re different! That’s definitely not the same person. He could still be alive," wrote another user.

‘Alive and Chilling’: Based on interpretations of new, unverified documents in the release, X users are speculating that Epstein did not die in 2019 but instead used the “suicide" as a grand deception and is currently alive. Another commented, “Of course he’s alive. Do you think that narcissist would k*ll himself?." Yet another remarked, “An email found in the Epstein Files backs up the theory that Epstein is alive and his “suicide" was a grand deception."

‘Baal’ Bank Account Account Conspiracy: A heavily shared, right-wing narrative claims an email in the new files shows Epstein named a bank account “Baal"—the name of an ancient deity associated with child sacrifice—suggesting his death was covered up by a cult-like ring. “The DOJ investigation report in 2023—Deep Dives into Epstein Death- jail cell- mental state- autopsy photos. Epstein had sleep apnea and his machine was also found in his cell, in perfect condition. His Brother Mark said the cord that would have been easier to use to hang himself than a sheets," a person wrote.

The “Green Dress" Van Driver: A document in the files (EFTA00133623) has sparked theories that a “guy in a green dress/military outfit" was seen in a van entering the jail facility on the night of the death, interpreted by some as evidence that he was smuggled out.

Missing Surveillance Footage: Theories continue to focus on why specific, crucial security camera footage from the Special Housing Unit (SHU) was missing or unverified, with claims that the “orange flash" seen on video logs proves an inmate (or assassin) was moved, not that he hanged himself. “Hyoid bone fractures occur in as little as 8% of cases like his. Seeing it this bad, especially in a room that is only 8-9 feet in ceiling height, makes it fair to ask if the entire story is a lie," wrote an X user.

‘Ghislaine Knows Too Much’: Given that Ghislaine Maxwell is alive and serving a sentence, new theories argue that if Epstein were truly dead, she would have been killed too, suggesting his death was a selective hit.

An X user wrote: “The Epstein files aren’t a revelation, they’re mockery. They’ve always told you what they were doing, openly, while you laughed and called it entertainment. Now the exposure goes public to normalize it, pull you in, and shift the paradigm, a textbook psychological operation."

A drone photo, allegedly from after Epstein’s suicide claims to show the financier, and has sparked further buzz.

AI-generated image in circulation?

“This photo is floating around claiming it’s Epstein alive and well in Tel Aviv Remember, there’s speculation that prison guard lieutenant posted on 4Chan that Epstein was wheeled out of jail alive, restrained in a wheelchair, and placed into a transport van. Considering how many conspiracies turned out true in the last few months/years, I am not discounting any theory anymore! (Although this image doesn’t look real) If Epstein turns out to be alive, I am closing my X account and retiring from this life," wrote an X user.

He further said: “Did a quick analysis, and it seems this is an AI-generated image likely using Google AI. Indicators: – Illegible Text: The Hebrew-style text on the street signs in the background is nonsensical and does not form actual words. – Anatomical Inconsistencies: The hands and feet of the figures appear blurred or distorted, and the legs of the person on the far left do not align naturally with their stride. – Blending Issues: There is unusual blurring and “ghosting" around the edges of the subjects, particularly where their legs overlap with the background or other figures. – SynthID watermark confirms that Google’s AI technology was used in its creation or significant modification."

Grok fact check

Grok fact-checked this saying, “Officially, Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide on August 10, 2019, as ruled by the New York City medical examiner and confirmed by DOJ investigations, including a 2025 report. Autopsy showed neck fractures consistent with hanging. Conspiracy theories claim murder or faked death due to jail lapses and his connections, but no evidence supports them. Public skepticism remains high."

“Epstein’s remains are in an unmarked crypt at IJ Morris at Star of David Cemetery in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, next to his parents. His brother arranged it after cremation," Grok added, sharing information on where Epstein is buried.
