Fonseca and Sinner played out a thriller at the Indian Wells Masters (X)
Joao Fonseca’s biggest weapon — his venomous forehand — almost caused some real damage during his blockbuster clash with Jannik Sinner at the Indian Wells Masters.
During their highly anticipated Ro16 showdown, one point perfectly captured just how dangerous the Brazilian’s power can be.
Fonseca stepped into the court and unleashed a ferocious forehand straight toward the middle — right where Sinner was positioned.
The Italian had barely any time to react — as he instinctively raised his racket like a shield, bracing himself and doing everything possible to avoid being struck by the rocket.
Fortunately, the Sinner escaped unhurt. Fonseca immediately apologized, and the Italian responded with a reassuring thumbs-up, drawing smiles from the crowd after the tense moment.
Sinner Survives Tight Battle To Reach Indian Wells Quarter-Finals
Playing in front of a packed primetime crowd in the Californian desert, Sinner and Fonseca traded blistering shots in a contest packed with power, intensity and razor-thin margins.
In the end, it was Sinner who held his nerve in the biggest moments, sealing a 7-6(6), 7-6(4) victory to book his third Indian Wells quarter-final appearance.
The Italian showed remarkable composure in the opening-set tie-break, saving three set points before eventually edging ahead.
The second set was just as dramatic. Sinner appeared on course to close out the match comfortably after racing to a 5–2 lead, but Fonseca refused to go quietly, forcing another tie-break.
There, Sinner once again found another gear to finish the job.
“Joao is an incredible player, incredible talent, very powerful from both sides. He was serving very well," Sinner said after the match.
With the win, the Italian moves one step closer to his first Indian Wells title.
Next up is 25th seed Learner Tien, who earlier produced a dramatic comeback of his own by saving two match points to defeat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
