John Jumper, who won the Nobel Prize alongside Demis Hassabis, is leaving Google DeepMind

John Jumper, the renowned artificial intelligence (AI) researcher who co-won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, has announced that he is leaving Google DeepMind after nearly nine years with the company.

In a move anounced on social media, Jumper revealed he will be jumping ship to join Anthropic, a major rival in the AI space, following a short break to recharge."A bit of news: After nearly 9 years, I have decided to leave Google DeepMind and join Anthropic (after taking some time to recharge). I am incredibly grateful for my time at GDM," he said in a post on X. "@demishassabis took a real chance letting me lead the AlphaFold team just six months after finishing my PhD, and the entire GDM team taught me so much about how to do great science.

GDM is a special place, and I’ll still be excited to hear about what amazing things they discover next," he added.Jumper rose to global prominence for his work as the director of the AlphaFold team at Google DeepMind. Alongside the company's co-founder and CEO, Demis Hassabis, Jumper developed AlphaFold, a groundbreaking AI system that solved a decades-old scientific challenge by predicting the 3D structures of proteins from their amino acid sequences.

The breakthrough was hailed as a monumental achievement for computational biology, speeding up biological research, the understanding of diseases, and the development of new therapeutics.When initially receiving his Nobel Prize alongside Hassabis and computational protein design pioneer David Baker, Jumper heavily credited his colleagues for turning the long-standing promises of computer-led biology into practical, real-world tools.
