A total of 903 candidates, including 468 undergraduates and 435 post graduates, received their respective degrees at the Graduation Day of the JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, here on Tuesday.

Among them, 506 were female and 397 were male candidates.

At the event, L.S. Shashidhara, Director, National Centre for Biological Sciences, TIFT, Bengaluru underlined the role of youth in nation building and reflected on India’s transformation from one of the poorest countries to the fourth largest economy in the world.

Mr. Shashidhara said that in 1947, the literacy rate of India was only 12% and the nation lacked major industries, but political leaders and scientists with a vision, prioritised education, science and technology as tools for nation-building. He touched upon the Green Revolution led by M.S. Swaminathan, and said that it ensured food security to the country and renewed national confidence. Investments in science, space, atomic energy, and information technology has shaped modern India, he added.

He said that government efforts alone cannot meet the diverse and growing educational needs of a country of 1.4 billion people, and that the role of institutions like JSS and its dedicated teachers was irreplaceable even in the age of artificial intelligence.

Mr. Shashidhara urged the students to develop self-learning skills, critical thinking, analytical abilities, and innovative problem-solving approaches. “If each one of you is successful, the country will be successful,” he added.
