India commenced their Junior Women’s Hockey World Cup campaign with a commanding 13-0 victory over Namibia on Monday as Hina Bano and Kanika Siwach each scored a hat-trick.
In addition to Hina’s goals and Kanika’s strikes, Sakshi Rana scored twice, while Binima Dhan, Sonam, Sakshi Shukla, Ishika, and Manisha also contributed to the scoresheet.
This win propelled India to the top of the table.
India took control of the game by scoring four goals in as many minutes during the first quarter. Sakshi opened the scoring with a brilliant reverse flick, and Kanika quickly doubled the lead with a powerful finish. Binima added the third goal with a sharp run and finish, while Sonam made it 4-0 after some neat interplay in the buildup during the first fifteen minutes.
With a comfortable lead, India continued to dominate as Sakshi scored her second goal with a superb run and a thunderous strike.
Namibia showed some aggression in search of an opening but was consistently thwarted by the Indian midfielders. India added a sixth goal as Sakshi converted her drag flick from a penalty corner. Kanika scored her second goal at the stroke of half-time, extending India’s lead to 7-0.
Firmly in control, India continued to dominate in the second half. Hina scored her first goal in the tournament with a ferocious strike into the top corner and added another within a minute, capitalising on a loose restart from Namibia.
Ishika scored the tenth goal following a rebound from a penalty corner. Hina completed her hat-trick with another deflection from a penalty corner.
Kanika secured her third goal from a penalty corner, giving India a 12-0 lead after three quarters.
In the final quarter, after making a few changes, India continued to create chances, with the bench players getting an opportunity to make their mark. Manisha then added her name to the scoresheet from a penalty corner, completing a 13-0 rout for India in their opening game.
