The injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have changed everything.

Luka Doncic, who had been leading the league in scoring, is dealing with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, while Reaves’ oblique injury is expected to sideline him for weeks. Coach JJ Redick has already hinted at “trial and error” lineups, leaning on younger guards like Bronny James, Kobe Bufkin, and Nick Smith Jr. to handle ball duties. For Bronny, the opportunity comes with lessons. His extended minutes against the Oklahoma City Thunder exposed both the pace and pressure of NBA defenses.

He did not shy away from acknowledging it.“I think I learned a lot,” Bronny James told the Southern California News Group. “Just trying to not play with the ball as much; get my team into whatever action we are in as quick as possible. … We just need to take care of the ball better.”Many of these players have shared time in the G League, building chemistry that now becomes valuable at the highest level. As Bufkin put it, “We’re prepared; all of us.”There is hunger in that group. And for now, hunger might be just as important as experience.

What did Lakers coach JJ Redick say about Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves' absence?

Redick has not tried to mask the challenge. His focus has been clear from the start. “Both those guys are going to try to come back,” he said. “And it’s our job to extend the season so that they can come back.”The decision-making around those injuries has also come under scrutiny. Redick stood firm, explaining that both players were medically cleared when they briefly returned during the Thunder game.

“As a coach, you go on the information you have. (Doncic) was medically cleared,” he said. “When Austin came back, I asked directly, ‘I thought he was hurt.’ (I was told), ‘No, he’s medically cleared.’ The group wanted to go for it in the second half.

Behind the scenes, communication continues. Redick has stayed in contact with Doncic, emphasizing the star guard’s determination. “I just know that he’s gonna do everything he can to try to be back,” he said. For now, the Lakers are left to navigate uncertainty. Lineups will certainly shift in the coming games.
