In a tragic chain of events in Davanagere district of Karnataka, the police have arrested a woman for allegedly eloping with her boyfriend just two months after marriage, an act that investigators say led to the deaths of her husband and her maternal uncle. The accused woman, identified as Saraswathi, was arrested and brought to the Davanagere Rural Police Station for questioning.

Police said Saraswathi, who was married to Harish from Gummanuru village, left her matrimonial home and fled with her boyfriend, Shivakumar, triggering a series of events that ended in two suicides.

Marriage, Elopement and the Immediate Aftermath

According to the police, Saraswathi and Harish were married around two months ago. The marriage was reportedly arranged by Saraswathi’s maternal uncle, Rudresh. Soon after the wedding, Saraswathi is said to have maintained contact with Shivakumar, with whom she allegedly had a prior relationship.

Investigators say Saraswathi eloped with Shivakumar in a car, leaving behind her husband and family. Her sudden disappearance caused severe emotional distress to Harish and others involved in arranging the marriage.

Two Deaths Linked to the Incident

Police confirmed that Harish died by suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his agricultural field. A suicide note was reportedly recovered, in which Harish named several individuals, holding them responsible for his mental state and death.

In another tragic development, Saraswathi’s maternal uncle Rudresh, who had played a key role in arranging the marriage, also died by suicide shortly after Harish’s death. Police said Rudresh was overwhelmed by guilt and shock over the developments and consumed poison, leading to his death.

Arrest of Saraswathi and Ongoing Probe

Following the deaths, Davanagere Rural Police registered cases and launched a detailed investigation. Saraswathi was traced to a relative’s house in Elebethur village and arrested. She was brought to the Davanagere Rural Police Station, where she is currently being interrogated under the supervision of Rural DySP Basavaraj.

Police said Saraswathi underwent a medical examination and will be produced before a magistrate. Authorities indicated she may be shifted to a women’s cell in either Shivamogga or Chitradurga as the investigation continues.

Search for Shivakumar and Other Relatives

Meanwhile, Saraswathi’s lover Shivakumar remains absconding. Police teams have been formed to trace him. Along with Shivakumar, Saraswathi’s uncle Ganesh and aunt Anjinamma are also missing, and their roles are being examined as part of the probe.

Police believe Shivakumar played a key role in facilitating Saraswathi’s elopement and are questioning multiple witnesses to establish the sequence of events.

SC/ST Atrocities Act Cases Registered

Two separate cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been registered against Shivakumar. One complaint was filed by Harish’s father, Maharudrappa, while another was filed by Purnima, the wife of the deceased Rudresh. Police said these cases are being investigated alongside the abetment charges.

Following the arrests, relatives of Harish staged a protest in front of the Davanagere Rural Police Station, demanding strict action against all those named in Harish’s death note. They have urged the police to arrest the remaining accused without delay and ensure justice for both families affected by the tragedy.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and assured that all individuals found responsible will be proceeded against as per law.
