Juveniles among six held for assaulting man in Chidambaram

The Chidambaram town police have arrested six persons, including five juveniles on charges of assaulting a man when he was returning from special prayers for Ramzan.

Police said Jamal Mohammed, 36, of Kollimettu Street in Chidambaram, was returning home after attending special prayers for Ramzan on Friday night. When he neared his home, J. Aravind, 19, of Omakulam and five juveniles travelling on two motorcycles waylaid Jamal and assaulted him.

Jamal’s brother Asandeen raised an alarm following which the gang fled the spot. A video of the incident went viral on social media platforms.

The Chidambaram town police perused the CCTV footage in the locality and arrested Aravind on Sunday while the juveniles were lodged in a Government Observation Home.

According to the police, the six were under the influence of alcohol. A case has been registered.
