The first-ever K.M. Basheer Journalism Awards, established in memory of the late Siraj news reporter who tragically lost his life in a 2019 road accident in Thiruvananthapuram, were presented on Sunday (September 14, 2025). The award, instituted by Siraj’s Malappuram unit, recognises outstanding contributions to journalism.

Kerala State Commission for Minorities member A. Saifudheen Haji inaugurated the award ceremony and commemoration. Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama secretary Ponmala Abdul Khadir Musliar gave away the awards to Shafi Karumbil, T. Sivajikumar, and Hameed Tirurangadi.

Kerala Muslim Jamat vice president Vadassery Hasan Musliar presided over the function. Siraj newspaper Thiruvananthapuram bureau chief Kasim A. Khader commemorated Basheer. Siraj news editor Mustafa P. Erakkal introduced the award winners.

Malappuram Press Club president S. Mahesh Kumar, former president Vimal Kottakkal, Siraj Malappuram unit manager K.P. Jamal Karulai and bureau chief Mujeeb Pullichola spoke.
