Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Ltd. (K-RIDE) on Wednesday distributed Social Security Term Insurance Certificates to project-affected persons (PAPs) along Corridor-2 of the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP).
The distribution took place during an Orientation Programme on Skill Development and Livelihood Restoration held at Yeshwantapur, according to a release.
Lakshman Singh, managing director of K-RIDE, handed over the certificates to PAPs, including slum dwellers, squatters, and members of the project workforce. Mr. Singh underlined the importance of integrating social safeguards with infrastructure development. He said that the BSRP is not just about improving urban mobility and reducing congestion and emissions, but also about ensuring fair compensation, social security coverage, and livelihood restoration for communities affected by large infrastructure projects.
As part of the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), a detailed census and socio-economic survey identified 263 project-affected persons along a 1.2-km stretch of the Corridor-2 alignment at Lingarajapuram and Banaswadi. This included 100 notified slum dwellers and 163 squatters. With support from the Karnataka Slum Development Board, eligible PAPs were provided financial assistance after consultations and disclosure of entitlements. Many families voluntarily self-relocated after receiving the required support, the release stated.
The programme focused on long-term livelihood restoration. Resource persons from the Rural Development and Self-Employment Training Institute (RUDSETI) briefed participants on various skill development and entrepreneurship opportunities. “The convenor of the State Level Bankers Committee elaborated on social security and insurance schemes of the State and Central governments. Under post-resettlement measures, affected households and the project workforce have been linked to schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, providing insurance coverage of up to ₹6 lakh per person,” the release added.
