Rana Balachauria, a kabaddi player was shot dead by unidentified assailants while he was participating in a tournament in Punjab’s Mohali on Monday.
The incident triggered panic at the venue packed with fans. Rana was also one of the organisers of the event.
According to the police, the attackers, who were on a motorcycle, approached the victim, Rana Balachauria, under the pretext of taking a selfie, before opening fire on him.
The Bambiha gang claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging that the victim had sheltered those involved in the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala, India Today reported.
Balachauria was rushed to a nearby hospital after suffering head and facial injuries, where he succumbed to his injuries. The victim sustained four to five gunshot wounds to his face and upper part of his body.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal blamed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for the shooting of Balachauria, calling the incident a failure of law and order.
In a post on X, Badal said the attack, had “shaken Punjab to its core" and held the Bhagwant Mann-led government directly responsible. He alleged that criminal elements had become emboldened under the current dispensation, to the extent that they were willing to open fire during a live sporting event in the presence of a large crowd.
“It is the incompetence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann that murders, extortions, and numerous other terrorist incidents are happening daily in Punjab, yet the police, instead of maintaining law and order, is focused on implementing the government orders related to political vendettas. While I strongly condemn today’s incident in the harshest terms, I also reiterate the demand for justice for the previous murders (in which several kabaddi players were also involved)," he wrote on X.
