BHOPAL: Two gates of the Kaliasot Dam were opened on Tuesday following a sharp overnight rise in reservoir levels. Gate No. 7 was opened at 11:00 am, followed by Gate No. 8 at 11:32 am under the supervision of TT Nagar SDM Archana Sharma.
Fire Officer Pankaj Khare and BMC divers were also present on site to assist with the operation and monitor safety during the controlled release. The dam surged beyond 60% capacity, prompting swift action from authorities to release water and ease pressure downstream. Water will be maintained at 60% capacity, according to an official. The dam’s Full Tank Level (FTL) stands at 505.67 meters, and current inflow from catchment areas is rapidly bringing it closer to that threshold. Overnight rains pushed the reservoir above 60% capacity, especially with inflows from upstream sources like the Upper Lake and Bhadbhada Dam.Civic teams remain on alert after parts of Bhopal experienced waterlogging late Monday, with more rain forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) till Wednesday. Residents near low-lying and downstream zones have been advised to stay cautious and avoid venturing near water bodies, officials said.
