Sun-baked heads no longer mean fatigue and discomfort for Kanpur’s traffic police. The city is now equipping its officers with high-tech AC helmets to help them beat the blazing summer heat.
For years, traffic police personnel in Uttar Pradesh have battled punishing summer heat that regularly soars beyond 45°C. Officers posted at busy intersections have often struggled without adequate shade or relief, leading to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and general discomfort during long shifts. Standing under the blazing sun while managing heavy traffic not only affects their health but also impacts their efficiency and alertness on the roads.
Recognising these challenges, the Kanpur police department has introduced innovative AC helmets designed to keep officers cool and comfortable. Developed by a Hyderabad-based private manufacturer, these helmets feature an integrated cooling system powered by a compact motor and rechargeable battery. Once fully charged, the helmet provides continuous cooling relief for up to eight hours, allowing officers to complete their full shift without interruption.
“The AC helmet has been a game-changer for us," said Inspector Rahul Verma, a traffic officer posted at Benajhabar Chowk. “Earlier, during peak summer, I used to feel exhausted within two hours. Now, even after six to eight hours on duty, I feel fresh and can focus on managing traffic effectively."
Cops said the design of the helmet is thoughtful and practical. A small but powerful fan circulates cooled air inside the helmet, while a protective visor shields the eyes from sunlight, dust, and pollution. Officers who participated in the initial trial reported noticeable relief from heat and sweat, saying it allowed them to focus better on their duties without frequent discomfort.
“This is not just about comfort," said DCP Traffic Ravindra Kumar. “It is about the health and efficiency of our personnel. When officers are comfortable, they can serve the public better. We received highly positive feedback during previous trials, and with summer here, we are deploying these helmets across Kanpur to ensure our officers’ wellbeing."
This initiative follows successful trials in other Indian cities. In Ahmedabad and Vadodara, traffic police personnel had earlier tested similar AC-equipped helmets to combat extreme summer temperatures, with positive outcomes reported. In Noida, 100 AC cooling helmets were distributed among traffic officers, featuring battery-operated mini fans that significantly reduced heat stress while on duty. These trials paved the way for Uttar Pradesh to adopt the technology on a wider scale.
Adding momentum to this initiative, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally distributed AC helmets to traffic police personnel last year. The event was part of the state government’s broader ‘smart policing’ initiative, aimed at modernising the police force and addressing challenges posed by extreme weather conditions. Speaking at the distribution, the Chief Minister said, “Our traffic police work tirelessly under harsh conditions. Introducing modern equipment like AC helmets is a step towards ensuring their health and operational efficiency."
Officials stress that equipping officers with AC helmets is not merely a matter of comfort. Reducing heat stress lowers the risk of dehydration, dizziness, and fatigue—conditions that can compromise alertness and operational effectiveness during peak traffic hours. Healthier, more comfortable personnel are better able to manage intersections, enforce traffic rules, and ensure smoother traffic flow across the city.
In Kanpur, the rollout of AC helmets is part of a larger effort to provide officers with modern protective gear. Alongside the helmets, personnel are being supplied with reflective jackets, red baton torches, and other essential equipment, particularly for night shifts and low-visibility conditions. “These upgrades help us not only stay safe but also maintain discipline on the roads," said Sub-Inspector Meera Sharma, adding that the reflective jackets and torches have made night duties easier and more efficient.
While the current distribution focuses on Kanpur, authorities have indicated that, based on the success of the initiative, AC helmets could soon be introduced in other districts, including Lucknow and additional parts of Uttar Pradesh. “We want every traffic officer in the state to benefit from modern technology that ensures safety and efficiency," said DCP Ravindra Kumar. He said AC helmets are a practical innovation that promises to improve working conditions, boost operational efficiency, and safeguard health in one of the country’s busiest urban environments.
