Orders for these brass idols come not just from Uttar Pradesh but from across India.

AGRA: Amid controversy over the inspection of dhaba names and staff’s religious identities along the kanwar yatra route in Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh stands out as an example of harmony.

Here, Muslim artisans play a vital role in crafting brass idols of Hindu deities—especially Lord Shiva and Shivlings—just before Sawan and the kanwar yatra.Known for its locks and educational institutions, Aligarh is now emerging as a centre for idol-making. Orders for these brass idols come not just from Uttar Pradesh but from across India.Raja Gupta, owner of a company making idols since 1957, said demand for idols of Shiva, Parvati and Shivlings has increased sharply.

“Our Hindu and Muslim artisans work shoulder to shoulder. Muslim workers, in particular, have expertise in the finishing touches. Their skill and dedication are key to meeting festival demand,” he said. Gupta added that preparations start a month before the yatra, showcasing India’s shared cultural fabric.Zeeshan Ahmed, a worker, said, “I’ve been giving finishing touches to Shiva idols for five years now. This work feeds my family. With Sawan approaching, demand is high, so we’re working hard.”Aqeel Khan, polishing idols for 21 years now, said, “Dozens of Hindu and Muslim workers work here together in harmony. The demand for Shiva and Parvati idols during the kanwar yatra keeps us busy. These idols go all over India and abroad.”
