On the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, the Karnataka government has decided to encourage the use of Khadi among government employees as a way to reconnect public service with India’s freedom struggle.

As part of the initiative, the state has requested senior officials to advise officers and staff to voluntarily wear Khadi attire on the first Saturday of every month, as well as during all official government programmes, including Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

Government officials said Khadi is not just a fabric but a powerful symbol of the nation’s dignity, self-reliance and pride. The move, they said, is aimed at promoting respect for indigenous products, strengthening unity and national spirit, reinforcing Indian identity and self-esteem, and instilling a sense of social responsibility among government officers and employees.

The decision is also expected to provide a boost to the rural economy, with officials noting that Khadi production supports thousands of spinners and weavers across Karnataka.

“At present, Khadi weavers are adopting modern designs and new styles in garment production. Khadi manufacturing remains a fundamental pillar of the rural economy and provides direct and indirect livelihoods to thousands of rural spinners and weavers in the state," an official said.

The government believes the initiative will not only revive interest in Khadi but also contribute to sustaining traditional livelihoods while aligning public service with the values of the freedom movement.
