A violent incident in Hassan district of Karnataka has drawn attention to a tragic case involving a family dispute that escalated into a fatal attack. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of an elderly woman following an assault at her home.

The incident took place in Shravanabelagola in Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan. According to police, a 65-year-old woman, Gangamma, was allegedly attacked by her son during a domestic argument.

She suffered severe head injuries and was admitted to the ICU at HIMS hospital. Despite treatment, she died around midnight on March 30.

Son Accused of Murder

Police have identified the accused as Umashankar, aged 40. Initial investigation suggests that the altercation was linked to repeated arguments over his marriage. Umashankar had reportedly been pressuring his family to arrange a marriage for him. Locals said that disputes between him and his mother over this issue had been frequent.

On March 26, an argument broke out between the two at their residence. During the confrontation, Umashankar allegedly assaulted his mother. She collapsed inside the house after being hit.

Police said he then allegedly struck her on the head with a stone, causing critical injuries.

Background and Health Concerns

Investigators also noted that Umashankar had suffered a head injury in an accident about a year ago while returning from Kumbh Mela. Since then, he was said to be dealing with mental health issues and would occasionally behave erratically.

This aspect is also being examined as part of the investigation. Police visited the scene and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered at Shravanabelagola police station.

Further investigation is underway to establish all details of the incident. The case has once again highlighted how unmarried youth in rural areas are taking drastic steps out of long term frustration.
