UDUPI: Police have arrested a man accused of snatching a 25-gram gold chain from an elderly woman in Ellare village, Karkala. The accused has been identified as Sunil Ramesh Lamani, 29, a resident of Goravanakolla in Savadatti taluk, Belagavi.Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said the chain-snatching incident was reported at Ajekar police station under Sections 329(3) and 309(4) of the BNS. The complainant, Kumuda Shetty, 80, was sitting in the courtyard of her house in Mulladu, Ellare village, on 9 September when the incident took place.A 35-40-year-old unidentified man approached her, introduced himself as a supervisor in Karkala, and enquired whether her house had CCTV cameras.
He then forcefully snatched the chain from her neck and fled, the SP said.The woman fell to the ground during the incident and sustained injuries to her forehead, right hand and leg. Sathish Poojary, who was nearby, rushed her to a hospital in Karkala.The SP said the chain was worth around Rs 1.75 lakh. A police team led by Karkala CPI D Manjappa, including Ajekar PSI Mahesh and others, arrested the accused and seized the ornament. The accused was later produced before a magistrate.
